Questions and Answers

Q: What is dermatopathology?

A: Dermatopathology is the science of integrating clinical dermatologic findings with observations through the microscope in order to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. It is a subspecialty of both dermatology and pathology.

Q: What is a dermatopathologist?

A: A dermatopathologist is a highly trained physician who specializes in diagnosing diseases of the skin through microscopic analysis of tissue. Dermatopathologists must be board certified in dermatology or anatomic pathology and subsequently receive one to two years additional training in an accredited dermatopathology fellowship program.

Q: Why use a dermatopathologist?

A: Dermatopathologists are qualified to interpret skin samples (biopsies) and provide consultative services for referring physicians by correlating clinical information with observations of microscopic tissue sections from biopsy specimens in order to come to the most accurate diagnosis. A dermatopathologist’s interpretation of skin biopsies, along with your dermatologist’s medical assessment, becomes crucial in the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of skin disorders.
