Botox and Fillers Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injection made from botulinum toxin, which temporarily paralyzes facial muscle activity that contributes to fine lines and wrinkles. The injections help reduce:

  • Crow’s feet near your eyes
  • Frown lines between your eyebrows
  • Forehead lines
  • Lines near the mouth and chin

Examples of injectable products containing botulinum toxin include Dysport®, Myobloc®, and Xeomin®.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that your provider injects beneath the skin to stimulate collagen and:

  • Smooth facial lines
  • Restore lost facial volume
  • Enhance facial contours and symmetry
  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Plump and enhance the lips
  • Fill acne scars

Examples of dermal fillers your dermatologist may recommend include Sculptra® Aesthetic, Juvéderm® products, and Restylane® products.

What should I expect during Botox or filler injections?

After a thorough consultation with your dermatologist, you arrive at the office for Botox or dermal filler injections. Your provider thoroughly cleans the area before treatment and gives you a topical anesthetic to numb the skin (if you’d like) to enhance comfort.

Dermal fillers

Your dermatologist injects the right amount of dermal fillers beneath your skin at strategic points. Many filler injectables contain a mild anesthetic that minimizes discomfort during and after the procedure. You may notice results right after the injections.

Your doctor might recommend you rest from strenuous activities the day of dermal filler injections, but there is little to no downtime. Side effects may include mild bruising or swelling. Depending on the type of filler used, results can last 6-18 months or longer.

Botox

Your provider injects Botox at strategic points beneath the skin to paralyze facial muscles and reduce lines. There is little to no downtime involved, but your doctor may recommend you avoid strenuous activities the day of the procedure.

Swelling at the injection site, mild redness, and bruising are common side effects. You may not notice effects from Botox right away, as optimal results generally appear 3-7 days after injections. About 3-6 months after the procedure, you might require additional Botox to enhance results.

Am I a good candidate for cosmetic injections?

Botox and fillers work well for all skin colors and types. Your provider lets you know if you’re a good candidate for these or other nonsurgical aesthetic procedures.
