Treatment Benefits

What To Expect

  • Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that develops from pigment-producing cells in the skin. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds can damage skin cells and lead to abnormal cell growth. Melanoma often appears as a new mole or a change in an existing mole or dark spot and can spread if left untreated.

At Specialists in Dermatology PLLC, our team focuses on early melanoma detection, diagnosis, and treatment planning. If you notice a new or changing mole, itching, bleeding, or any visible change in a spot on your skin, it is important to schedule a professional skin exam.

A helpful way to monitor moles at home is the ABCDE method:
    A – Asymmetry
B – Borders that are irregular
    C – Color that varies
    D – Diameter larger than 6mm
E – Evolution or change over time

If melanoma is diagnosed, prompt treatment is important. Surgical removal is a common treatment approach, and your provider will recommend the most appropriate option based on the location and characteristics of the lesion. Our team also provides prevention guidance, including sun protection strategies and the importance of regular self-checks and follow-up skin exams.

  • Bring note of any new, changing, itching, or bleeding moles or spots you want evaluated. Avoid heavy makeup or body coverage that could limit skin visibility during the exam.

  • Follow your provider’s recommendations after your visit. If additional evaluation, biopsy, or removal is needed, you will receive specific instructions and follow-up guidance.

    • A thorough skin evaluation and review of concerning areas

    • Discussion of the ABCDE warning signs

    • Possible recommendation for biopsy or removal if a spot appears suspicious
