Treatment Benefits

What To Expect

  • Surgical dermatology focuses on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of skin cancer and other complex skin conditions. At Specialists in Dermatology PLLC, our team treats a high volume of skin cancer cases each year and provides comprehensive care for both common and complex diagnoses.

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized surgical technique used to treat many skin cancers, particularly those located on the face, head, neck, hands, or other anatomically sensitive areas. This procedure removes cancerous tissue in stages while preserving as much healthy surrounding tissue as possible. Mohs surgery is frequently used for recurrent tumors, aggressive cancers, and areas where tissue conservation is especially important.

Skin cancer develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and invade surrounding tissue. The most common types include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which often appear as persistent, non-healing growths. Melanoma, a less common but more aggressive form of skin cancer, arises from pigment-producing cells and may present as a changing or irregular mole.

Surgical treatment options depend on the diagnosis, tumor location, and prior treatment history. Procedures may include surgical excision, Mohs surgery, or other physician-recommended approaches. When detected early, most skin cancers are highly treatable. Your dermatologist will guide you through diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care based on your individual needs.

  • Your dermatologist will review your diagnosis and explain the procedure in detail prior to surgery. No special preparation is typically required unless otherwise directed.

  • After surgery, patients receive detailed wound-care instructions. Follow-up visits may be scheduled to monitor healing and recovery.

    • Temporary redness, swelling, or bruising

    • Mild discomfort at the treatment site

    • Gradual healing over several weeks
